I know we all love bacon…….like seriously who doesn’t……..And hopefully after this post you will continue to eat pork or not :S if not sorry……
As you may or may not know Canada is the third largest pork exporter in the world. Though not even half of us know how the pork is available in our supermarkets. Investigation director, Twyla Francois from Mercy for Animals Canada reveals a secretly shot video of the behind the scenes. The way pigs are treated in a Sow farm owned by a major Manitoba Pork Producer, Puratone. The video reveals gruesome scenes of pigs being harmed. Almost every year thousands of pigs are slaughtered and castrated. Consumers who saw this video were devastated, even piglets endured sever pain due to fattening. Animal Abuse or more specifically cattle abuse continues to occur in Canada unpunished. When investigators interviewed a few staff and employees working in this sow farm, they claim that castration, confinement and the use of bolt guns are standard across Canada . Canada ’s producers are certainly shocked and disappointed, they agree that standards are in need of instant change, though it would cost more money for new and improved methods to take into action. Money which Canada does not have at this moment.
On Nov 20, the National Form Animal Care Council says they will set new farm standards, though the whole industry may face a financial crisis, and even loose business. Many sow farms state “Low-cost, meat production cannot be made pretty, it has a huge price to pay.” Some consumers are okay with this fact, they only care about the profit and another half of consumers are devastated. Currently Maple Leaf foods are in the process of taking over the Puratone Corporation facilities for it is the only hope for change. I did not post a link, due to the fact that the video included is way to gruesome (even I myself only watched 5 minutes of it and it was horrible, for those who may be interested you may refer to the Toronto Sun or CTV news website.) I believe the Pork industry should spend those extra bucks to slaughter pigs with humane considerations. I know this is going to have a huge negative impact for the pork industry in Canada . Many Meat consumers have started to boycott and question the industry. Consumers may stop buying pork due to improper treatment of cattle and many other accusations and complaints will occur. Even animal rights groups have started to boycott the company and demand grocers to stop buying meat from hog farms which mistreat pigs. In this situation, I think that there is only two options, either the company educate and convince people it is the cheapest and easiest system to produce meat or the company will have to change the current procedures.
So what do u girls and guys think?
How is the Pork industry going to be affected due to the cruelty of pigs?
Will they loose business? Or will they come up with a clever strategy to overcome?
Please give me your opinion on this matter

I myself do not eat pork and have never eaten pork but what they're doing is really cruel. It's not only to pigs but I know of many farms that have mistreated cows and chickens as well. Personally, I think this is just another one of those animal cruelty hypes, we see them all over the news and all over the internet and people say it's wrong, some try and take action but a majority of people are soo used to it that they don't even care. That's what I think this situation is. It's just another one of those animal cruelty hypes, I'm not saying this isn't going to affect the Pork industry, it will, but probably not drastically. This obviously isn't something new and has probably been going on for years so my assumption is people just don't care anymore.
ReplyDeleteExcellent choice of article Hima. This article really ties in with the Corporate Social Responsibility Chapter that we learned in class. Some of these companies only care about making profits and thus they often put others concerns as secondary? Personally I would rather spend a bit more but get quality products which are made ethically rather than getting cheap products ( I know, I know..It goes against the brown morals :P "If I can get it cheap somewhere else, then why should I waste my money here? " )
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with tasha on this. This article and all the posts might affect the companies a bit but it will soon by forgotten? There has been accusations in the past as well but they always get shut down by multinational beef companies. I believe that people that love bacon will eat bacon even if they see the video. Food has the miracle to control everyone ;)
Really good and relevant post Hima. Actually, this type of issue deals with many topics in the course, in addition to CSR as Dpac suggested. In the end, economics tells us that all costs will (eventually) get passed on to the consumer. Thus, increasing the costs/expenses on Sow farms will increase the price of pork consumers will have to pay. Consequently for the industry as a whole, if the price of pork increases, the demand will go down as consumers may substitute their protein/meat needs for other alternatives. This is a tough one for the regulators to figure out. Great posting and comments guys!
ReplyDeleteWell our economy would be impacted as well, Hima stated that we are the third largest pork exporter in the world. If pork is truly that a big of a deal in Canada then our economy will face a crisis. Although this sounds odd but I would like to see the farmers go through what the pigs go through and see how they feel. Animals should be treated as equals because they do contribute to our lives.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the Pork industry will lose business. I believe that people will stop buying pork because they know that pigs were slaughtered to make the pork. If people stop buying the pork, the Pork industry will not make any money. As a result, it will go out of business. Maybe, Canada will be able to try new methods of making pork in the future.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I hear about these things or see the videos, I swear is top eating meat for like a week! Even though i'm a meat lover, I hate seeing the way the animals are treated... sure it's the natural cycle of life and stuff, but to cause so much pain before the animals die isn't right. With regards to business, I never knew Canada was such a major exporter of pork, I always thought that we imported a lot. I'm so glad that there are better standards being set.
ReplyDeleteAlso, watch "meet your meat" it's such a horrible thing to think that people actually do that.
Pork is a protein that everyone enjoys as it takes form in many food delicacies such a bacon, ribs, pulled pork. In my opinion, hearing how the pigs are getting treated isn't going to affect consumers drastically. However, in terms of those who truly care for the animals such as the pigs, you could expect some protest against the companies who treat pigs this way.
